About this site

An independent index of music software. Written by hand, deliberately short, and kept simple.

What it is

Patches ’N Racks catalogues music software — synthesizers, effects, drum machines, samplers, sample libraries, DAWs and utilities — and links out to the people who make it. It currently holds 116 entries from 72 developers.

It is a directory, not a shop. Nothing is sold here, nothing is downloadable from here, and there are no accounts. Every outbound link goes straight to the developer's own site.

Why it exists

Existing plugin databases are comprehensive but hard to read, and most product pages are written to sell rather than to inform. The aim here is narrower: fewer entries, clearly labelled, each saying plainly what the tool does and whether it is free or paid.

How entries are chosen

  • Usefulness first. A tool is included because it does something well, not because it is new or popular.
  • Free tools are treated equally. There is no separate second-tier listing for freeware. Several of the strongest entries cost nothing.
  • One category, several tags. Entries are classified by what the tool is, then tagged with what it does, so filtering stays useful as the directory grows.
  • Nothing is paid for. No developer can buy a listing or a position.

Why entries are short

Each entry says what the tool is, and nothing more. There are no prices, no release dates, no ratings and no check dates, because all of those change and then the site is quietly wrong. Free means genuinely free to use; anything with a paid tier, a subscription or a limited trial counts as paid.

A few entries carry a short personal note, which is the only first-person writing on the site. Those are opinions, clearly marked as such.

Accuracy

Formats, platforms and the free/paid split are checked when an entry is written and revisited when someone reports a problem. Because nothing here depends on a price or a version number, entries stay accurate for far longer than a catalogue that tries to track both.

If something is wrong or unfair, say so — corrections take priority over new entries. See submit or correct an entry.

Who runs it

Patches ’N Racks is part of BrynSonic, an independent music production house. It is maintained by one person, which is why the directory is curated rather than scraped, and why it will grow slowly.

Independence

This site is not affiliated with any developer listed. Product names and logos belong to their respective owners and appear only to identify the product. Where an outbound link may earn a commission, it is disclosed — see the affiliate disclosure.
